When your assignment is over

I remember speaking to my mum a few days ago and she said she was cleaning the bathroom. CLEANING THE BATHROOM?!!! Imagine my shock. Mummy why na? She laughed ‘but i dont have anything else to do’. I said read a magazine, go sight seeing do anything but manual labour. She said dont worry when its your turn you will understand.
It made me think, that moment will come for all of us. Eighteen years, twenty one years or any other years we consider our children will finally have their independence will never be enough. A baby cot is bought. We rock the baby, sing nursery rhymes. We help with the homework and get excited in their achievements. We put up christmas trees and go for family service. New year comes and goes. The season comes and goes and with each our children are getting older and getting closer to leaving our care. The days pass uncounted, until they end. Your child is finally old enough to leave. First to school and then permanently when they get married. To start their own life and continue the cycle. At first, my parents were like giants who held my hand and filled my world. Then a middle-aged couple who paid the bills and ran the household. Now, decades later having to deal with our absence. Near but still far. I can remember the last time I hugged my parents in the front of our home, after I got married never to return as a permanent residence where I always had a room. It is a memory of warmth. I can only hope to leave my children the same.

Parenthood offers many lessons in patience and sacrifice. But ultimately, it is a lesson in humility. The very best thing about your life is a short stage in someone else’s story. And it is enough. All our fussing, all our complaining of no time for this or that, all our moaning about how we want our lives back and our children are taking all of our time – I will repeat my mothers words to you – don’t worry when its your turn you will understand. Enjoy the moment now, because soon it will come like a thief in the night – they will be gone and you will start cleaning the bathroom happily because there will be nothing else to do.
